Jeff and I left Perth 11 days ago, not knowing if we would fly out of Exmouth straight to Ayers Rock or what other options would show up. During those 11 days, we snorkeled the Ningaloo Reef nearly every day. Had encounters with all kinds of wildlife, above and below the sea, and met Jeroen and Ottine along the way. They made it possible for us to drive the long distance from Exmouth to Perth, instead of flying, and we have found our transportation for the remaining 4 1/2 weeks of our journey. It's a 1983 Ford Falcon station wagon. Who would've figured? Our "No-plan" plan was working out better than we could've planned ahead of time.
The four of us arrived at our final destination on December 30, 1999 to find the city filling up fast for the eve of the new millennium. We were going to party like it's 1999, 'cause it was! Backpackers, cruise ships, miliary troops on shore leave, and tourists from all over the world were descending upon this corner of the world, and we were part of it.
Without calling ahead to reserve a room anywhere in town, we were fortunate to find space available at the YHA Coolibah Hostel in Perth. We settled in and got ready for the big day.
